Interactive learning for future climate researchers
The Forscherfabrik Schorndorf is a science center for pre-school and primary school children. It offers interactive experiments and workshops to encourage an interest in science and technology from an early age.
The new “Climate Lab” exhibition area focuses on the topics of weather and climate to provide children with factual information on climate change and possible actions in their everyday lives. The concept of the Lab is tailored to the living environment of primary school children and includes three interactive exhibits that retain the playful approach of the Forscherfabrik. The focus is not on providing simple solutions, but on encouraging children to think more deeply and to continue researching.
The interactive stations offer child-friendly and playful explanations to various questions: What is the difference between weather and climate? What characterizes a climate zone? Why is the earth warming up and what is the greenhouse effect? How can personal, climate-friendly decisions and everyday behavior influence the climate?
The climate puzzle offers kids the means to understand the basics by selecting climate zones and assigning appropriate weather maps for the months of the year. Supported by dials, LED lights, instructions and wall graphics, children develop an understanding of the climate of their home region. The air layers exhibit illustrates the influence of the atmosphere on the climate and the effect of climate-damaging gases. Kids can observe temperature changes and energy emissions by adding or removing filter layers, with sensors and displays clearly showing the changes. In the CO2 game, children learn how their everyday choices can influence climate change. By making quick decisions in a digital activity game, for example when choosing clothes or means of transportation, they learn about the impact on their carbon footprint, as explained at the end of the game.
Children are naturally curious and thirsty for knowledge. The playful and experience-oriented approach in the Climate Lab not only imparts knowledge, but also motivates children to explore and investigate more deeply. In doing so, science becomes an adventure that inspires young explorers and gives them the opportunity to actively understand and shape their environment.
